City Band at the Grey Roots Heritage Fair

City Band percusion/horn player Nolan Murphy (13) has assembled a fabulous display of photos, memoirs, recordings, videos and artifacts on the history of the Owen Sound City Band for his entry into the 4th Annual Grey Roots Regional Heritage Fair opening today at the Grey Roots Museum and Archive.  Thanks to some terrific support from band members past and present, the presentation covers the history from the early marching bands of Wm Iles on through the Youth Band years and up to the present day.

Nolan's display will compete with entries from grade 4-8 students from several local schools; the Fair itself is April 28, but projects will remain up for public viewing in the museum lobby until the end of Saturday April 30th.

Heritage Fairs are a grand celebration of Canada's past, in the form of student history projects.  Students research Canadian heroes, legends, milestones, and achievements - and proudly present their stories at a public exhibition.

The Grey Roots Regional Heritage Fair allows students to celebrate our heritage and share their work with the community. Participating schools send the best student projects from each class, grades 4-8, to represent their school. This fair could only be possible because of the special talents and dedication of our teachers and principals.

GreyRoots Bandstand Grand Opening

Mark your calendars for a September 18th noontime celebration out at the Good Cheer Bandstand of the Moreston Pioneer Village at the Grey-Roots Museum and archives as we christen the new bandstand with some vintage brassband and woodwind hits. The City Band takes the stage at noon followed by the ribbon-cutting at 1:30pm, and meanwhile over in by the ironworks, there's a whole day of blacksmithing demonstrations:

Hammer-In and Good Cheer Bandstand Grand Opening
10:00 am - 4:00 pm, members of the Ontario Artists Blacksmith Association will be congregating for a festival of iron and fire. In addition to our two onsite Blacksmith Shops: the Pioneer Blacksmith Shop and the 1920s George Rice Blacksmith Shop, visiting blacksmiths from across Ontario will set up portable forges in Moreston Heritage Village for multiple demonstrations. Don't miss this living history experience of a skill that was so central to life even less than 100 years ago. Interested in taking home some arts of the anvil? There will also be amazing forged pieces for sale by individual artisans.

Also on the 18th... enjoy a stroll through Moreston Heritage Village which includes a farm house, schoolhouse, garage, blacksmith shop; stop and listen to the stories from days gone by with costumed interpreters and watch demonstrations of period activities.

And by way of a teaser for the bandstand show, here's a short video preview glimse originally posted to our Facebook Page, the City Band on hand at Moreston Village way back last Canada Day (July 1, 2010) for a test run of the new gazebo -- the sound was fantastic!

Video: Canada Day at Grey Roots

while the town square park at the Moreston Heritage Village may not be quite complete, the bandshell is up, and that's reason enough for the Owen Sound City Band to give it a grand (but chilly) Canada Day inaugural concert.  It was just like old times ...
